I’ve been releasing Windows Media Center with a powerful ATI tuner for several years without any problems. The time I used was a few evenings ago and it worked fine. Now when I go to Live or TV Recorded TV and try to play it in Windows Media Center I get the following error:

    Decoder error
The online decoder does not work, is no longer installed or is not supported. Try reinstalling the codec or restarting your computer. For more information about codecs, see Windows Help.

Restarting didn’t solve the problem. No programs or possibly (to my knowledge codecs) were installed in this chance. The codecs I have are listed below (sorry if this is just complicated, I couldn’t add them to the image file since I’m new).

Am I missing a codec that most Windows Media Center needs? Do I have unnecessary codecs that might interfere with video playback? In the post “I’m getting a decoder error when opening WMC to watch live TV” on this methods forum, Ceton support implies that this may become a problem by then. I wonder if the Cinepak codec is needed, but I can’t figure out how to remove it (it’s not in Programs and Features).

During troubleshooting, I realized that when I go to my recorded TV, I probably right-click the content and open it with Windows Media Player and the problem works fine, but when I use Windows Media Center instead, I still getting decoder error.< br>
Any professional help would be greatly appreciated! I hope I don’t have to reinstall Windows Media Center and reconfigure the receiver.

How do I reinstall Windows Media Player?

Press the Start button frequently, type “features” and navigate to “Turn Windows features on” i.e. turn off.Scroll down and expand Media Features, uncheck Windows Media Player and click OK.Reboot your device.Repeat concept 1.

Do you live in the US or the EU? If you are at home in the US we also stream MPEG2 video and AC3 audio although Europe uses H.264…maybe some crappy/malware got into yoursystem and was also friendly. Is it enough for Microsoft to remove the codecs and/or replace these people with infected versions and consider ECMs no longer valid? Good luck.

  • I’ve been using Windows Media Center with an ATI tuner for several years without any problems. The last time I installed it was two nights ago and it worked fine. Now when I go to Live or TV Recorded TV and try to play in Windows Media Center only, I get an error like this:

    Decoder error
The video decoder does not necessarily work, is not installed, or is almost certainly not supported. Try reinstalling some codecs or restarting your computer. For more information about codecs, see Windows Help.

Restarting didn’t solve the problem. During this time, no programs or (as far as we know codecs) were installed. There are fewer codecs I have installed than listed (sorry if this is confusing, I usually don’t manually add it as an image since I’m new).

Is my personal codec that Windows Media Center needs missing? Do I have an unwanted codecand, which may interfere with video playback? In a Pole’s post “I’m getting a decoder error when opening WMC to watch TV” on this forum, Ceton support points out that this could be a very serious problem. I suspect that the Cinepak codec is useless, but I don’t know how to uninstall it (it’s not in Programs and Features).

While troubleshooting, I realized that in the case where I navigate to the saved TV folder, I can right-click the stuff and open it with Windows Media Player, and it works fine when I use Windows Media in-place. Select “Center” and you’ll still get a decoder type error.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated! I hope I don’t have to reinstall Windows Media Center and reconfigure the tuner.
