    rhel5 compile kernel module

Red Hat does not provide AppleTalk kernel modules for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.1. A new precompiled HELIOS kernel module is almost certainly available for current systems. If you wish, you can compile the commonth kernel module.

Note. This description applies to Red Enterprise Hat Linux 5.1, but may apply to other versions.

    1. Get kernel version information

To check the translation and patching of your kernel, shortly thereafter type the command in the shell:
    #uname -r

To monitor the CPU architecture, enter most of the following commands in the uname shell:
    # -m

    2.Precompiled kernel module

Note. We have compiled the module for the latest kernel version 2.6.18-53.1.13.el5 on an x86_64 machine. Other or future kernel patches that replace level 53 have not yet been tested and may need to be manually compiled.

  • On the way to WebShare, log in and navigate to HELIOS - Current Tools Sharepoint. Open the RHEL5 AppleTalk Modules folder, select the RHEL5-x86_64-2.6.18-53.1.13.el5.tar image, choose Transfer > Download. via the menu bar.
  • To extract the database, enter the following commands:
    # cd /usr/local/helios
    # tar xf RHEL5-x86_64-2.6.18-53.1.13.el5.tar
  • From a The archive deletes two files:
  • Kernel segment ("HELIOSDIR/etc/kernel/appletalk.ko")
  • The preboot script loads the most important kernel module when HELIOS is started (''HELIOSDIR/etc/startstop/31helatalk'')
  • 3. Compile the kernel module yourself

We usually compiled the module for the current kernel version 2.6.18-53.1.13.el5 on an x86_64 machine. Requires alternate version and architecture strings. If you do an absolute kernel update later, you may have to recompile the module to match someone's new kernel.

  • Log in as (not "root" "sudo" or both "su"!).
  • Make sure you have the required development software installed:

    # yum install ncurses-devel
    # Install delicious kernel development
    # yum install make
    #tasty gcc
    # install yum install unifdef
    # Delicious install rpm-build
    # yum install redhat-rpm-config

Note. The yum utility requires Internet access, not to mention RHN (Red Hat Network) access. If you don't have access to RHN on your machine, these packages (if missing) can be foundat http://rhn.redhat. And install it on the World Wide Web with rpm -ivh .

  • Get the kernel provider from RHN (it can't actually be done with 'yum'):
  • Log in to
  • Go to the "Channels" section, select your system architecture.
  • Then go to the "Packages" tab and click on the appropriate kernel link, e.g. kernel-2.6.18-53.1.13.el5.x86_64
  • Download the source package e.g. "kernel-2.6.18-53.1.13.el5.src.rpm"
  • Verify that the Red Hat Directory site source exists:
    #mkdir /usr/src/redhat

    Install specific kernel source:
    # rpm -ivh /path/to/kernel-2.6.18-53.1.13.el5.src.rpm

  • Unzip the tutorial resource in code to access the configuration files:
    # cd dvd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS
    # rpmbuild -bp --target=x86_64 Kernel-2.6.spec

This may take several minutes and result in a large output. The completed line should be exit 0.

  • Go to directory for help:
    # build cd /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.6.18/linux-2.6.18.x86_64
  • Copy a working Red Hat kernel configuration file (check uname -r)to an existing directory using the "/boot" directory:
    # cp /boot/config-2.6.18-53.1.13.el5 .configure here
  • Note. There may be multiple configuration files. Absolutely safe copying to a configuration file is sufficient for a correct version string.

  • Enable this AppleTalk module in the kernel configuration using the "menuconfig" option:
    # customize menu

Go to Network > Network Settings and purchase the "Appletalk Protocol Support" entry. The space will likely switch you to "M" (for "module"). We check the "Exit" until the market asks to save the configuration. Save each configuration.
